RYA Training Centre

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the national governing body for water sports in the United Kingdom, recognized globally for setting the gold standard in maritime training, safety, and certification. Founded in 1875 as the Yacht Racing Association, the organization oversees activities ranging from dinghy sailing and windsurfing to motor cruising, powerboating, and personal watercraft.

RYA Powerboat Level 1
(RYA PBL 1)

The RYA Powerboat Level 1 (Start Powerboating) course is a 1-day practical introduction to boat handling and safety. It aims to provide absolute beginners with the basic skills needed to helm a small powerboat under supervision. The ratio of students to instructor will be a maximum of 3:1.

Pre-course Experience

You do not need any experience for this course.

Duration

1 day (typically 7 to 8 hours afloat).

Minimum Age

The minimum age for this course is 12. Candidates under 16 receive an endorsed certificate.

RYA Powerboat Level 1 course takes you from absolute beginner to confident skipper in 24 hours. Under the guidance of our fully RYA-qualified instructors, you’ll get hands-on experience handling the helm, docking like a pro, and mastering water safety.

Course Syllabus

Preparation & Safety

  • Personal Gear: Choosing personal buoyancy, lifejackets, and appropriate clothing.
  • Pre-Start Checks: Checking the fuel tank, fuel lines, bulb, and starting/stopping the engine.
  • Kill Cords: Understanding and consistently using an appropriate length kill cord at all times.
  • Boat Equipment: Introduction to anchors, lines, fenders, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.

Boat Handling & Manoeuvers

  • Low-Speed Control: Directing the boat ahead and astern, and steering in confined spaces.
  • Planing Craft: Basic behavior of a boat at speed, propeller angle, and use of shallow drive.
  • Coming Alongside: Leaving and returning to a pontoon or jetty while accounting for wind and current.
  • Mooring Buoys: Method of approach, crew communication, and securing the craft to a mooring buoy.

Launch & Recovery

  • Slipway Operations: Using a boat trailer or launching trolley safely.
  • Environmental Assessment: Checking sea conditions, wind, and ramp hazards.

Theory & Emergencies

  • Towing: Basic theory of preparing lines and accepting a tow from another vessel.
  • Man Overboard: Theoretical framework for recovering a person from the water.
  • Regulations & Awareness: Introduction to local byelaws, insurance, look-out duties, and the impact of boat wash on other water users.

This course covers launching, mooring, anchoring and includes close-quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations.

RYA Powerboat Level 2
(RYA PBL 2)

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PBL 2) syllabus is a comprehensive 2-day course designed to teach fundamental boat handling, safety, and seamanship for open powerboats under 10 meters (accepted for 12 meters in UAE). It forms the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The ratio of students to instructor will be a maximum of 3:1.

You do not need any experience for this course, but it may be preceded by Power Boat Level 1.

Minimum Age

The minimum age for this course is 12.

Ability after Course

You will be a self-sufficient power boater in the right conditions; aware of your own limitations and those of the craft.

Course Syllabus

Practical Boat Handling

  • Launching and recovery: Slipway use, trailer care, and checking sea conditions.
  • Preparation: Securing gear, lines, fenders, and tying essential marine knots.
  • Close-quarters handling: Turning in tight spaces, steering controls, and managing tidal streams.
  • High-speed manoeuvres: Planning speeds, engine trim, and executing U-turns and S-turns.
  • Coming alongside: Approaching a pontoon or wall considering wind and current.
  • Mooring & Anchoring: Securing to a buoy, checking holding grounds, and weighing anchor.
  • Man-overboard recovery: Emergency action and safe retrieval drills.

Theory and Background Knowledge

  • Collision regulations: Basic IRPCS rules to avoid collisions at sea.
  • Navigation & passage planning: Introduction to charts, tides, and buoyage systems.
  • Safety equipment: Knowledge of lifejackets, flares, fire extinguishers, and first aid.
